Conway: 'Tremendous Disappointment' Dems Boycotting Inauguration

It's a "tremendous disappointment" that nearly 70 Democratic members of the House of Representatives will stay away from President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration ceremonies, but his camp respects their choice, incoming presidential councilor Kellyanne Conway said Friday.

"They are missing out on a very historic moment in our nation's evolution," Conway told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program, but the representatives are not fulfilling "the commitment they made to their own constituents by staying away."

To be part of America's democracy, she continued, that means respecting election results and showing support for the eventual president.

"You will see Donald Trump today as the big man on the stage who is telling America this is your government," said Conway. "This is a democracy for the people. He actually will convey today, I predict, that this is not about him. And that's a very non-Trumpian thing, the way people look at him. This is not about him.

"He ran for the people. I want people to see that family up there and look at him and remember the enormous sacrifices he made just to be the president of the United States."

Conway said the Trump presidency will mark a "fresh coat of paint" and is a "fabulous opportunity to unify the country and take action the way a successful billionaire businessman who has created jobs over a series of years and connects naturally with people can do."

Trump is moved by the "enormity and gravity and responsibility" of becoming president, and is making history, said Conway.

"We never had a president who had no political and military experience," said Conway. "America just made good on their 30-year desire to have somebody who has been successful outside of government and who comes to Washington owing no one anything."

Trump is enjoying the day and celebrating it with his family, which is important to him, Conway continued, and America should really look at that today and see the full measure of the man who is about to be their president."

Conway said she wants people to also see the sacrifices Trump and his family have made, including giving up deals worth billions of dollars and revenues.

"His adult sons will be running the company while he is running the country," said Conway. "This is a true family affair. But most importantly, people should look at them and realize that if you see him there, he actually gave up more money, more power, more prestige, more position than he will have."

She also hopes that Congress will respect Trump as president, and give him the same consideration that both Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama took office.

"They had seven to nine confirmed secretaries of state, commerce secretaries, so government can function," said Conway. "We need at least that, and I think that's very important for us to actually show that all these plans and actions can be fulfilled immediately when you have your own team."
