The Democratic Party's convention left a more positive impression on the American public than did the Republican Party's convention, a new poll shows.

The Gallup survey released Monday asked voters if they had a more or less favorable opinion of each party after their conventions, and found that:
  • Democratic convention: 44 percent were more favorable, 42 were less favorable
  • Republican convention: 35 percent were more favorable, 52 percent were less favorable.
Asked how the convention would affect their vote for president:
  • Hillary Clinton: 45 percent more likely to vote for her; 41 percent less likely
  • Donald Trump: 36 percent more likely to vote for him; 51 percent less likely.
According to Gallup, this year's GOP convention is the first since 1988 after which a greater percentage of Americans have said they're less likely rather than more likely to vote for the party's nominee.

On voters' ratings of each candidate's acceptance speech, the survey found:
  • Clinton: 44 percent rated it "excellent/good," 17 percent "just OK," 20 percent "poor/terrible"
  • Trump: 35 percent rated it "excellent/good," 18 percent "just OK," 36 percent "poor/terrible"
Trump's speech was rated less positively than any Gallup has asked about since 1996; the the positive rating of Clinton's speech is slightly below the historical average of 47 percent, the pollster notes.

The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
