More than 100 prominent conservatives have signed a letter backing Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who has been under fire by President Donald Trump.

The letter, spearheaded by the Conservative Action Project, is posted on the group's webpage.

"We support Attorney General Jeff Sessions and believe he is the right man, and the best man, to lead the Justice Department at this time," the letter said.

"He has already led the Department of Justice to correcting wrong-headed direction in many, many areas. While all conservatives are not in agreement with all his decisions, we respect that he has undertaken many reforms with very few colleagues in the department who were similarly supportive of President Trump from the very early days. To lose his leadership would be disastrous for the President's policy agenda."

It noted Sessions has "fearlessly executed President Trump's agenda."

"No one in the Trump administration has shown more commitment to president's principles than Sessions — he continues to be a loyal ally of the president, and of the people who elected him," the letter said.

Among those whose names are affixed to the letter are: Edwin Meese, who served as attorney general under former President Ronald Reagan; former Sen. Jim DeMint; Family Research Council President Tony Perkins; Media Research Center President Brent Bozell and Gary Marx of the Judicial Crisis Network.

The letter comes as Trump has repeatedly criticized the attorney general in public.

Last week, the president told The New York Times he would never have appointed Sessions to the post had he known the attorney general was going to recuse himself from the Russia investigations.

Sessions called the criticism "hurtful," but noted he serves at the pleasure of the president, the Washington Examiner reports..
