Conservative Groups Attack Warren-Backed Hearing Aid Bill

Sen. Elizabeth Warren's legislation that would create an over-the-counter category of hearing aids is being attacked by two conservative groups despite support for the bill from both sides of the aisle, Politico reported.

Frontiers for Freedom and the National Rifle Association have launched campaigns opposing the bill, with Frontiers creating an ad saying Warren's bill would "eliminate states' rights, expand the size and power of the federal government, resulting in higher prices for consumers," a claim denied by the Consumer Technology Association.

The NRA, a gun-rights group, is only opposing the bill because Warren had co-sponsored it, according to The Boston Globe.

"The backlash appears to be rooted less in the substance of the legislation and more in the fact that it's Warren — a senator increasingly targeted by Republican groups — who is behind it," the Globe wrote.

The bill would give more people access to cheap hearing aids, ones that cost in hundreds of dollars. Prescribed devices, according to Politico, can cost up to $2,500.
