PPP Poll: Cockroaches, Genghis Khan Preferable To Congress

Tuesday, 08 Jan 2013 05:38 PM

Public Policy Polling found that Americans hold Congress in such low esteem that only 9 percent hold a favorable view of the legislative body, according to a recent poll.

The poll found that the American people prefer lice, cockroaches, colonoscopies, the band Nickelback, and Mongol Emperor Genghis Khan to Congress.

The approval rating for Congress has consistently been in the low teens, or single digits, for a year or longer, so PPP conducted its most recent poll by comparing federal legislators to some of the most complained about items in the American lexicon.

“We've seen poll after poll after poll over the last year talking about how unpopular Congress is but really, what's the difference between an 11 percent or a 9 percent, or a 7 percent favorability rating?” PPP analysts wrote about their latest poll. “So we decided to take a different approach and test Congress' popularity against 26 different things. And what we found is that Congress is less popular than cockroaches, traffic jams, and even Nickelback.”

Editor's Note: Should Kerry and Hagel Be Confirmed?

Americans prefer lice 67 percent to 19 percent, colonoscopies 58 percent to 31 percent, Ghengis Khan 41 percent to 37 percent, cockroaches 45 percent to 43 percent, traffic jams 56 percent to 34 percent, and Nickelback 39 percent to 32 percent.

Congress didn’t lose to everything that PPP threw at respondents. Legislators beat out Lindsey Lohan 45 percent to 41 percent, telemarketers 45 percent to 35 percent, Fidel Castro 54 percent to 32 percent, and gonorrhea 53 percent to 28 percent.

The poll was conducted among 830 people from Jan. 3 to 6. The margin of error in the poll is 3.4 percent.
