Texas Republican Mike Conaway said that he wants to work with Democrats on finding answers in the government's investigation into possible Russian influence in the 2016 presidential election, USA Today reported.

Conaway was thrust into the lead role of the House Intelligence Committee after erstwhile chairman Rep. Devin Nunes recused himself to fight ethics charges.

"I've got an opportunity to—or we (Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff) and I—have an opportunity to reset that narrative. Whatever those answers might be, whoever it hurts or whatever. Let's just get those facts," Conaway said at a town hall meeting in Texas.

Conaway said he is not worried that the investigation would turn into a Benghazi situation where a bipartisan committee's findings would be questioned.

"To be concerned about it means I could do something about it. And I can't. I've got an investigation. I've got certain tools. I've got a good partner," he said, referring to Schiff.

Schiff on April 6 praised Conaway in a tweet:

At the Texas town hall, Conaway also said his focus is getting to the bottom of the situation. Conaway did not mention news leaks to the media, which Nunes had been focused on, The New York Times reported.

"Whether it helps, whether it hurts, whatever. That's not my concern right now. I just want to find out what happened," Conaway said.

Brandon Rottinghaus, a Texas political science professor, said that Conaway faces political pitfalls in the investigation.

"He could be held to blame by Republicans and by his constituents for being the ringleaders that found what was happening," Rottinghaus told The New York Times.

Ernest Angelo, a longtime acquaintance of Conaway's told the Times that Conaway has built up a reputation for being trustworthy.

"I think if he finds that (evidence of wrongdoing), it'll be because it's true."
