If Republicans keep their hold on the House, Rep. Mike Conaway said he's "open" to permanently chairing the chamber's Intelligence Committee.

The Texas lawmaker is already leading the Intelligence Committee's probe of Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election, and simply responded "sure" after he was asked by The Texas Tribune if he'd like to take over the full chairmanship.

Conaway was named to head the Russia investigation after current Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., stepped aside in April amid revelations that he'd gone to the White House, in secret, to view documents that he said revealed Trump associates were "unmasked" during surveillance of Trump Tower, reports The Washington Examiner.

Conaway already chairs the House Agriculture Committee, while holding positions on Intelligence subcommittees that oversee the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency.

He told The Tribune that his staff helps him balance his roles.

"I've got as good as – or better than – any team that's ever been put in place," Conaway said of his agriculture panel staff. "I sound like Donald Trump, but it's true because everyone of my guys, my peeps, they're the best. They've got great depth."
