Newt Gingrich, who was a history professor before he entered politics, does not have encouraging words for people hoping America's fractured society can kiss and make up.

Appearing Wednesday on Fox News Channel's "Tucker Carlson Tonight," the former House speaker compared the current divide to the Civil War era.

Gingrich said a professor friend at Gettysburg College says the response of South Carolina slavery-supporting newspapers to President Abraham Lincoln was "almost verbatim" to the way the left currently is responding to President Donald Trump.

"I wish we could all sing 'Kumbaya' and come together," Gingrich said. "But I don't think that's going to happen. I think what's going to happen is the left is going to get crazier and crazier."

Even when Trump "goes off the reservation," he said, the left finds "a way to be dumber."

Carlson told Gingrich he does not want another Civil War and asked what could be done to prevent it.

Gingrich offered no solace.

"Look, as historian, my view is pretty straightforward," he said. "It's not like you come together in some grand compromise. One side or the other wins."
