Colorado GOP Chief: Gardner 'Leading Charge' to Take Senate

By    |   Friday, 31 October 2014 05:59 PM

If Republicans score a Senate majority in Tuesday's midterm elections, they may have their candidate in Colorado, Rep. Cory Gardner, to thank for the winning margin, the state's party leader told Newsmax TV on Friday.

"Colorado potentially is the tipping point," Colorado Republican Committee Chairman Ryan Call told "MidPoint" host Ed Berliner. "That's why the stakes are so high."

Call sounded upbeat about the closely fought and very expensive race, praising Gardner and his team for undercutting the Democratic "war on women" attack meme adopted by Sen. Mark Udall — the endangered incumbent and scion of a political family.

"Voters in Colorado and around the country are tired of this false [war-on-women] narrative, and Democrats have completely overreached," said Call.

Gardner, meanwhile, "has run a disciplined and focused and incredibly positive and optimistic sort of campaign," said Call, adding that the "negative, dark, fear-mongering sort of tactics Democrats have employed just have not resonated or stuck."

Call said that Udall, "rather than running on his record — he's been in the Congress for 16 years … decided to make this race largely about Cory Gardner."

Instead, the pro-life conservative Gardner and his supporters have succeeded in tying Udall to President Barack Obama, who Udall has backed "99 percent of the time" on issues such as the Affordable Care Act and delays in construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, said Call.

With pollsters predicting a photo finish, Call said, "At this point it's pretty hard for Udall or even for Cory Gardner to necessarily do anything that would change the dynamics and the momentum in this race.

"We've already had almost 1.2 million [early] votes cast, already received," said Call. "We expect about 2 million, maybe 2.1 million or so votes to be cast in total. So the reality is that the momentum, I don't see this thing completely shifting.

Call said that "we're pushing very hard to get out those last votes, over this weekend, and on Monday, and on Tuesday. But Republicans are optimistic. They've got opportunity to have Colorado lead the charge of winning back majority control in the United States Senate."

If Gardner wins,Call predicted that the new junior senator for Colorado will "reach across the aisle … to find solutions to problems rather than just simply posturing for political gain like we've seen from the Democrats over the last few years."

"He really is going to be one of those reformers in the U.S. Senate that we desperately need," said Call.
