Colin Powell, who served as secretary of state in a Republican administration, told CNN on Sunday that he no longer considers himself a member of the GOP.
“I can no longer consider myself a fellow Republican,” said Powell. “I’m not a fellow of anything right now. I’m just a citizen who has voted Republican, voted Democrat throughout my entire career and right now I’m just watching my country and not concerned with parties.”
Powell, who during the 2020 presidential campaign, supported Democrat Joe Biden, told CNN that, following the siege of the U.S. Capitol, it was a time for accountability.
He stressed that he did not know how President Donald Trump “was able to attract all these people. They should have known better. But they were so taken by their political standing and none of them wanted to put themselves at political risk. They would not stand up and tell the truth.”
Powell was the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and then the national security adviser during the 1980s and 1990s.
He joined the Republican Party after leaving the military in 1996 and then served as secretary of state under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2005.
