Chris Cuomo, the host of CNN's "New Day," sparred Wednesday with Paris Dennard, the former director of Black Outreach for George W. Bush, regarding President Donald Trump's comments about the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Cuomo said that Dennard was "straining" to defend Trump's statements. During a Tuesday night speech in Phoenix, Arizona, Trump mentioned his comments, but left out the part where he said "many sides" were at fault.

"I'm not straining … don't put words in my mouth," Dennard said, according to Raw Story.

The "New Day" host noted that Trump left out the words. "Why you're not owning it, I don't know," Cuomo said to Dennard.

Dennard said that Trump's statements on denouncing the neo-Nazis and white supremacists at Charlottesville would never satisfy his critics. "You keep moving the goal post for him, it's never good enough. He's denounced them multiple times. I think this is like the fifth time that he has denounced them," Dennard said.

Regarding Trump saying that there were good people on both sides of the violence in Charlottesville, Dennard cited Heather Heyer, the counter-protester killed in the violence, as one of the "good people," during the CNN interview.

"He wasn't talking about Heather Heyer," Cuomo said, referring to Trump. "He was saying there were good people there with the KKK (Ku Klux Klan). Don't bring Heather Heyer into this. She was on the other side. She was fighting against the Nazis! She was part of the 'many sides' problem that the president drew up. Don't put her in the 'good people.'" Cuomo said to Dennard in the "New Day" interview segment.

When Dennard told Cuomo to "be careful" with his rhetoric, Cuomo responded: "Take your own advice." Dennard responded, "I do," according to Raw Story.
