A news reporter and frequent critic of President Donald Trump claimed Thursday that the controversy surrounding family separations at the United States' border with Mexico is worse than the Hurricane Katrina fiasco that plagued former President George Bush's presidency.

Jeffrey Toobin, a legal analyst for CNN, gave his opinion on the matter during "New Day" and said Trump is facing a storm entirely of his own making.

"A metaphor we're starting to hear more and more is that this is Donald Trump's Katrina, a turning point in how he's portrayed," Toobin said.

"But in many respects, this is worse than Katrina. George W. Bush didn't create the hurricane. He didn't make it rain. Whereas these 2,300 [children separated from their parents] — there was no reason for these kids to be separated from their parents under existing government policies. But they created this problem. Now it seems like they have no real way of trying to solve it."

After days of outcry over the administration's zero tolerance policy toward illegal immigration that results in children being separated from their parents when families illegally enter the U.S., Trump signed an executive order Wednesday to keep families together as adults await processing for the criminal charges they face. It's worth noting that families who enter the U.S. at official ports of entry are not subject to criminal charges and are therefore not separated.

Despite the pushback on the policy that has been halted, the Obama administration also separated families at the border when they snuck into the U.S.

Hurricane Katrina was a category 5 storm that killed nearly 2,000 people in 2005. Bush and his administration were criticized for how they handled its aftermath.
