A lawyer for Hillary Clinton's campaign said it did not ask for a recount nor did it seek one, but since there is one, it's incumbent on them to "observe the process" to protect the Democratic nominee's interests, The Washington Post reported.
General Counsel Marc Elias told the Post in a Q&A the campaign does not believe in or have any "evidence of widespread fraud," nor is it participating because it thinks the outcome will change.
"Our role will be to observe the process and ensure that Secretary Clinton and her voters' interests are protected and that there is an accurate vote count," Elias told the Post. "Our participation is not meant to signal to anyone that we believe the results of the election will change.
"We have not asked for a recount. We have not sought a recount. We have not pushed for a recount," but since Green Party candidate Jill Stein initiated one in Wisconsin, the Clinton campaign was obligated to participate.
"As one of the candidates in the race we are necessarily involved in the process and will participate," Elias said.
