Ex-Bush Staffer Blakeman: 'Country is Bushed and Clintoned Out'

By    |   Friday, 14 March 2014 05:01 PM

The nation does not need another Clinton — or another Bush — in the White House, according to Brad Blakeman, a former member of President George W. Bush's senior staff.

"I love the Bush family, I've served them, but, look, the country is Bushed and Clintoned out," Blakeman told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"Certainly there are other people who should be rising to the occasion of service to this country."

But Blakeman believes that Jeb Bush, the former governor of Florida who has been rumored to be weighing a 2016 presidential run, would be great as the top Republican mover and shaker.

"I happen to believe that Jeb Bush would make an absolutely fantastic RNC chairman. He would be able to lead our party, unite our party, advance our party, broaden our party," Blakeman said.

"That would be Jeb Bush's role, but I don't see him as being viable in 2016."

Story continues below video.

As far as former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as the Democrats' choice, "I happen to believe that Hillary Clinton is weaker today than she was in 2008," Blakeman said.

"She has more of a résumé to be the president of Condé Nast, a travel agency, than she does the president of the United States.

"The fact that she traveled places is not what's important. It's what she did when she got there and when she left, and nothing has been accomplished. If anything, the world is a much more dangerous place under her tenure than it was prior."

Asked if he was impressed by any Republican names for 2016, Blakeman named Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio.

"Rob Portman is Reaganesque in the sense that he's a no-nonsense, principled person from a battleground state who also has tremendous economic credentials having served in the House, now the Senate, OMB [Office of Management and Budget] director," Blakeman said.

"This guy is going to be able to put America back on the right economic course. [He's] a serious leader, not somebody who's a fringe person. This guy is steeped in economic credentials, exactly what America's going to need."

Blakeman, former president of the Washington-based lobbying group Freedom's Watch, is critical of President Barack Obama's accomplishments.

"If it wasn't for bad news, Obama doesn't make news," Blakeman said.

"Everything he touches, whether it's healthcare … the economy, unemployment, entitlements, the teetering of bankruptcy in Chicago, Detroit, immigration, foreign policy, the military's being gutted – if the president told us in 2008 what the country would like in 2014 under his direction, he wouldn't be elected dogcatcher."
