Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., seized on criticism of President Donald Trump's "slow-footed, disorganized and not adequate" response to the humanitarian effort in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria.

"Stop calling names, stop downgrading the motives of people calling for help, but roll up his sleeves and get to work," Sen. Schumer told CBS's "Face the Nation" on Sunday.

Schumer was referring to President Trump's response to criticism from San Juan Mayor Carmen Yuln Cruz.

"The president, instead of tweeting against the mayor of San Juan, who's watching her people die and just made a plea for help, ought to roll up his sleeves and get to work here," Schumer told host John Dickerson. "The bottom line is, at least for the first week-and-a-half, the effort has been slow-footed, disorganized and not adequate."

President Trump was ripped by some for going to Texas too soon after Hurricane Harvey, potentially affecting recovery and relief efforts, but Sen. Schumer was not satisfied with the president's staying out of the way until his trip this Tuesday.

"The president going makes a huge difference, and logistics didn't get in the way in the past," Schumer told Dickerson.
