Schumer: Trump Gets Failing Grades for First 100 Days

MSNBC's "Morning Joe"

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Monday he and others in his party are giving President Donald Trump failing grades for his first 100 days in office, but he's still willing to work with him.

"Promise after promise to working people has been broken," the New York Democrat told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program. "Clean the swamp? We have a Cabinet that's filled with billionaires and conflicts of interest."

Lobbyists also remain, even though Trump had made campaign promises to shut them out, Schumer continued.

"What about healthcare?" he added. "They said, the president said, it will cost less and you'll get more. His bill does exactly the opposite."

Trump also promised to be tough with China, said Schumer, and has not kept his promises on trade except for pulling out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement, which "was happening anyway,"

Schumer also said he finds reports that the United States is working with China to put pressure on North Korea "a bit contrarian."

"I think China does what it wants until they're shown strength," said Schumer. "Their mother's milk is the economy, trade and how they gain trillions of dollars by stealing our intellectual property, but dumping excess steel and aluminum. The way to get China to help with North Korea is be tougher with them on trade."

However, Schumer said he and Trump have started speaking with each other more, and spoke as recently as this past Thursday.

The senator said he and Trump have always have had the kind of relationship where they can talk with each other, but "then there was that name-calling period, where he called me names and stuff. But now he's calling me on occasion. I tell him what I think."

Schumer said he has stressed infrastructure and trade when they talk, but Trump is "mainly interested in talking about what he wants to talk about."

However, he does not agree with the stance of lawmakers like California Rep. Maxine Waters, who said she will not work with Trump because she does not trust or respect him.

"I've always had an internal gyroscope," said Schumer. "We're not going to oppose things because the name Trump is on it."

"Right now, the president's idea of compromise is he never talks to us," said Schumer. "He puts in a proposal and says you support it. That makes it bipartisan. That's not the way America has ever worked. I've tried talking to him about China. We sent him an infrastructure plan, an area everyone thought we would work on, Democrats, the whole caucus, Bernie Sanders to Joe Manchin supported this proposal. Haven't heard a peep in two months."

Schumer said it's not likely that Democrats will work with Trump on his tax cut plans, as most are going to help the very wealthy, but he did admit that Obamacare "needs changes."

"We maintain our position; drop repeal, which isn't going to work," said Schumer. "They're going to be in the same pickle this time than they were the last time and we'll work with you to improve ACA. That's been our position all along."
