Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., called on incoming National Security Adviser John Bolton to "temper his instinct to commit our armed forces to conflicts around the globe" in a statement Thursday night.

Democrats have blasted the choice of a "hawkish" Bolton as H.R. McMaster's successor, claiming President Donald Trump is building a "war Cabinet" amid the latest White House shake-ups.

Relative to other Democrats, Schumer's response to Bolton's announcement might be considered a bit tempered.

In a Facebook statement, Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., ripped Bolton, who he said "forcefully advocated for the Iraq war."

"Critically, Mr. Bolton does not have the faith and confidence of Congress," Menendez concluded. "I, for one, intend to ensure that Congress fully exercises our power and authority under Article I of the Constitution to conduct vigorous oversight of our nation's foreign policy during these chaotic times."
