Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., is vowing Democrats will be "relentless" in blaming Republicans for looming Obamacare premium hikes, The Hill is reporting.
Schumer noted proposals released recently revealed double-digit premium increases for next year. Insurers have cited the GOP repeal of Obamacare’s individual mandate as one of the reasons for the increases, according to The Hill.
Several insurers in Maryland and Virginia are seeking the double-digit percentage increases in monthly costs for individual medical plans in 2019. The two states are the first where 2019 rate requests have been made public.
"We Democrats are going to be relentless in making sure the American people exactly understand who is to blame for the rates," Schumer said.
"Republicans control the House, the Senate (and) the presidency. The rates go up, especially after all their actions, it's on their back and they know it."
Meanwhile, Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., said the rate increases would have been considerably lower of Democrats had not blocked his stabilization bill earlier this year.
