Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called on President Donald Trump on Wednesday to "stick with these principles" of support for universal background checks and other declarations made during a bipartisan meeting on gun safety at the White House.

"I want to commend the president for going far beyond the Fix NICS bill," the New York Democrat said in a statement posted on Twitter.

He was referring to legislation pending in the Senate on strengthening the national background checks system.

"The president's comments indicate that he supports universal background checks and even possibly an assault-weapons ban.

"But the next step is even more important," Schumer, a longtime gun-control advocate, said. "Despite the huge pressure that will come from the hard right, the president must stick with these principles."

At his White House session, Trump pushed legislators to develop a comprehensive bipartisan bill on gun safety that would include provisions on background checks, addressing mental-health issues — even raising the gun-buying age for certain weapons from 18 to 21.

The president also declared that he would issue an executive order banning the sale of bump stocks, the devices uses on the guns in last year's Las Vegas massacre.

He also scolded the lawmakers on being "petrified" of the National Rifle Association.

"You can't be petrified."

In his statement, Schumer said that Trump "must push congressional Republicans to resist the NRA and support these proposals which are endorsed by the overwhelming majority of Americans.

"Only when we achieve these changes in legislation will America be safer."
