Democrats spent too much time criticizing Republican candidate Donald Trump during the 2016 campaign "and too many people lost that," Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Wednesday.

"In 2016, there was too much emphasis on Trump," Schumer told Chris Cuomo on CNN. "We are getting it back."

Schumer was referring to the party's agenda and focus on such issues as infrastructure, expanding broadband to more American homes, and "being focused like a laser on the middle class."

"We're talking about things that matter: healthcare, infrastructure, taxes," he said. "One-third of homes don't have broadband. You can't do business."

Schumer noted Democratic President Franklin D. Roosevelt said in 1941 that "every American home should get electricity.

"We're saying the same thing about broadband," he said. "Very popular in rural areas.

"Job training, so we can prepare people for jobs.

"We are focused like a laser on middle class," the senator said. "As we get closer and closer to the campaign, it's going to help us dramatically.

"We can't just be anti-Trump," Schumer continued. "People sort of know what Trump is.

"He makes the anti-Trump argument himself to the majority of Americans."

Democrats, Schumer added, "have to be for a lot of good, positive things.

"We have done some of those — and we'll do more of them so that the middle-class people, who are the Democratic Party, know not only that we care about them, but we will work with Republicans.

"If we get the majority" in the fall congressional elections, he said, "that's going to start happening."
