Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is demanding answers from the White House after the director of Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service was reported to have visited the United States to meet with American government officials last week.

Russian news agency Tass reported Tuesday that Sergey Naryshkin was in the U.S. last week for meetings. The report has not been confirmed, but Naryshkin's presence stateside would be notable because he was once slapped with travel restrictions by the Obama administration as part of sanctions placed on Russians in 2014, Politico noted.

"The Trump administration must immediately come clean and answer questions: which U.S. officials did he meet with?" Schumer said Tuesday, according to The Hill.

The Senate voted last year to impose more sanctions on Russia, 98-2. The Trump administration said Monday however, it would not place more sanctions on America's Cold War foe.

"Most important is his visit, why the Trump administration decided to forego sanctions, which as you know the deadline was yesterday," Schumer said.

"We sanctioned the head of their foreign intelligence, and then the Trump administration invites him to waltz through our front door. This is an extreme dereliction of duty by President Trump."

The Trump administration released Monday a list of 114 Russian politicians and oligarchs, at least some of whom would likely be subjected to sanctions if the White House decided to go forward with those.
