Sen. Chris Murphy: Trump's Travel Ban 'Will Get Americans Killed'

Senate Democrats will introduce legislation Monday afternoon to give Congress and Republicans an option to repeal President Donald Trump's executive order banning people from seven countries with ties to Islamic radicalism from entering the United States, Sen. Chris Murphy said Monday as he believes the ban "will get Americans killed."

"You've had enough Republicans go on the record who have reservations in the United States Senate to be able to get to 60," the Connecticut Democrat, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program.

However, Murphy conceded that the House may not vote for the measure and "it doesn't mean you'll get a presidential signature, but you might get enough Republicans joining us to make this even more uncomfortable for the president."

Legal options are probably the fastest way to get the ban overturned, Murphy said, "but we are going to put in legislation this week that will make it clear that that 1965 law that says you can't discriminate based on religion or national origin prevails over any presidential discretion that Trump is using."

The ban will also give the Islamic State and other radical groups a recruiting tool, Murphy said.

"This is going to be all over the Dark Web, recruiting both international terrorists and lone wolves here at home," said Murphy.

"In Iran specifically, a country that is right now, tilting between hard liners and moderates who want to engage with the west, this is a huge win for hard liners and makes [President Hassan] Rouhani's job even more difficult.

"[If] you're worried about a conflict between the United States and Iran this makes it much more likely."

No matter how often Trump references the 9/11 attacks, none of the four countries that were points of origin for the attacks were targeted on Trump's list, Murphy continued.

"Right now, people can come to the United States from Europe through the Visa waiver program" said Murphy. "The Europeans have been miserable at sharing information with each other about threats inside that continent."

In addition, Murphy said, problems in the Middle East can't be solved by the United States acting alone.

"It's got to be a Muslim face, and Sunni problems need to be solved by Sunni people," said Murphy. "This makes it almost impossible to engage with a lot of our allies in the region.

"The last time I was there, our allies told us we are not a partner in fighting ISIS if we are not a partner in trying to deal with the flow of displaced peoples outside of those countries."

And all along, the United States has been "very tight" concerning the number of Syrian refugees allowed in, said Murphy, and he does think that was appropriate.

"A lot of us have believed that that number should get bigger rather than smaller, so long you can do a tight security vet, which we do," Murphy said.

Russia also can't be trusted when it comes to helping in the fight against ISIS in Syria, as their number one with priority is and always will be to preserve the Assad regime."
