President Donald Trump is "undermining both his credibility and the credibility of the presidency" through his actions surrounding the Russia investigation, Sen. Chris Coons said Wednesday.
"The former FBI director who he fired, the NSA director, the director of National Intelligence all have reportedly said the president engaged in completely inappropriate conversations" about Russia or the decision to fire former national security adviser Michael Flynn," the Delaware Democrat told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program.
"He either doesn't understand how these relationships work between the presidency, law enforcement and the intelligence community or he just doesn't care. That makes all of us less safe."
It's important that the Senate and House investigations move forward, as "there's a lot of smoke here," Coons continued.
"When the former CIA Director [John Brennan] testifies as he did yesterday, the ongoing investigation is well founded," said the senator. "When he left office, he had seen evidence that gave him pause and real concern. I think there's a lot of smoke here. I think it deserves a thorough and fair investigation."
Coons said he is encouraged that former FBI Director Robert Mueller has been named as a special counsel to move forward with the Russia investigation, as "it's important for the country that we get to the bottom of this."
At the same time, he continued, Trump must stop doing things that could be "misunderstood as either interfering in this investigation or raising more questions."
Coons Wednesday also commented on reports that British Interior Minister Amber Rudd has complained that intelligence about the suicide bomber in Monday's Manchester attack was leaked to the American press too early, potentially hindering the investigation.
"We've got a very close intelligence and defense partnership with the U.K., and that news is troubling," said Coons. "It suggests that we have even more close allies who are questioning whether we can be trusted with vital intelligence.
"This is a key part of what keeps us safe is a global network of allies with whom we share intelligence and strategic planning and defense resources."
