Dem Sen. Coons 'Gravely Concerned' Only Trump Loyalists Will Stay in Senate

Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., said Thursday that he will be "gravely concerned" if Republicans who oppose President Donald Trump continue to resign.

Coons appeared on MSNBC's "Morning Joe"? to address the resignation of Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., who will step down at the end of his term, as will Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., both of whom have publicly feuded with Trump.

"I serve on the Foreign Relations Committee with Sen. Flake and Sen. Corker, and although we disagree on a very wide range of things… we share a commitment to America's role in the world as a country that leads the global fight for freedom, that leads based on our commitment to open societies, to free press, to human rights, not just our narrow national self-interests," he said.

"And I think Sen. Flake saw clearly the threat to that position that Donald Trump's international policies present. And that made it harder and harder for him to be successful in a primary campaign in Arizona."

Trump on Wednesday tweeted after Flake's announcement that he and Corker were resigning not because of him, but because neither could win re-election next year.

Coons added that "if the voices of Chairman Corker and Sen. Flake are missing from the other side of the dais in the Foreign Relations Committee and if, as [Oklahoma Republican] Sen. [Jim] Inhofe is saying, only those who are blindly loyal to President Trump should continue to serve as Republicans in the Senate, then I'm gravely concerned about what that says for America remaining the beacon of freedom in the world."
