GOP Rep. Collins: I Didn't Read Full Healthcare Bill Before Vote

(CNN)

Rep. Chris Collins (R-NY) said he did not read the full healthcare bill before he voted for it, during an interview with Wolf Blitzer Thursday on CNN.

"I will fully admit, Wolf, I did not. But I can also assure you my staff did. We have to rely on our staff," Collins said.

The New York Republican said he was "very comfortable" with the health plan as an improvement over "the disaster called Obamacare."

"This legislation affects a fifth of the U.S. economy, and millions and millions of Americans. Don't you think it was important to sit down and read the language of this bill?" Blitzer asked.

The congressman said he probably was not the only congressman who did not read the entire bill.

"I have to rely on my staff. And I can probably tell you that I read every word, and I wouldn't be telling you the truth, nor would any other member," Collins said, referring to other congressmen in the House of Representatives.

"We rely on our staff and we rely on our committees. I'm comfortable that I understand this bill in its entirety, Wolf, without poring through every word. I'm being quite honest, that's the way it is," Collins added.

Rep. Thomas Garrett (R-Va.) also said Thursday that he had not read the whole bill.

Every member would have had time to read the bill, according to Steve Scalise (R-Louisiana) earlier Thursday in a CNN interview with Jake Tapper.

"Every member that voted on this bill had more than enough time to read every aspect of it," Scalise said, adding, "Even the changes that we made today were about three pages worth of changes. The whole bill is less than 200 pages."
