New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says the Bridgegate scandal that rocked his administration affected him more severely than losing his bid to be the 2016 Republican nominee for president.

"Bridgegate was much harder for me than losing the presidential race," Christie told NJ Advance Media.

"Because I think in the presidential race I had some control over the situation and I just lost. Like, OK, I've lost elections before, so I knew the sun came up the next day. Right?"

But according to Christie, Bridgegate — in which his aides masterminded a traffic jam at the George Washington Bridge as political payback to a mayor who didn't endorse their boss — deprived him of "the benefit of the doubt — that's all. That's a big thing. But that's what it did.

"When you're tough and you're fighting and pushing all of the time . . . people love that as long as it doesn't stray over a line that they draw somewhere that goes from that to bullying.

"And I think people viewed that conduct of having gone over the line, and they blamed me for it even though everyone has proven I had nothing to do with it. Even the felons, the three felons, didn't even say I knew anything about it."
