Anthony Scaramucci's ouster signals the new White House chief of staff, retired Marine Gen. John Kelly, appears to have the power to rein in President Donald Trump, The New Yorker's Ryan Lizza reported.
After Scaramucci's vindictive, profanity-laced tirade against former chief of staff Reince Priebus and chief strategist Steve Bannon – which Lizza exclusively reported – Trump's sympathies afterward appeared to be with Scaramucci rather than Priebus, who subsequently resigned.
But, according to Lizza, "a hint" of Kelly's potential sway came two weeks ago in Aspen, Colo., at a private briefing for current and former national-security officials.
Lizza, citing unnamed sources at the briefing, reported Kelly told those skeptical about Trump's border wall proposal he had convinced the president there need not be a physical wall along the entire border with Mexico – and sophisticated monitoring technology, air surveillance, and fencing could serve that purpose.
Kelly added a caveat at the briefing, sources told Lizza, "something to the effect of, 'But you never know: one tweet, and that could all change.'"
