Chelsea’s Mother-In-Law Begins Congressional Comeback Bid

Marjorie Margolies, Chelsea Clinton’s mother-in-law, has put the wheels in motion to regain the Congressional seat she lost 19 years ago, reports The Washington Post.

On Thursday, Margolies filed paperwork to run in the Democratic primary for Pennsylvania’s 13th congressional district.

She’ll be attempting to replace Democratic Rep. Allyson Schwartz, who is planning a run for governor and will not seek re-election.

The 70-year old Margolies, president of Women’s Campaign International who also teaches at the University of Pennsylvania, has thrown her hat into a crowded ring.

Five other hopefuls have also filed to run in the primary, including state Sen. Daylin Leach and state Rep. Brendan Boyle.

When Margolies was first elected to the House in 1992, she was known as Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky and was married to former U.S. Rep. Edward Mezvinsky.

She cast one of the two final votes on Aug. 5, 1993, to push President Bill Clinton’s budget to victory in the House, 218-216, a budget that raised taxes on the wealthy.

Margolies-Mezvinsky had said she would vote against the budget, but changed her mind after taking a last-minute phone call from Clinton.

Her 1994 challenger, Jon Fox, focused his campaign attacks on her decision, ultimately swaying voters in the wealthy district against her.

Margolies has since divorced Mezvinsky, who went to prison in 2003 for defrauding investors of more than $10 million.

He was released in 2008.

Her son, Marc Mezvinsky, married Chelsea Clinton in 2010.
