Former Rep. Charlie Dent said Wednesday that Republicans were "in a bad place now" because of President Donald Trump, though he shied away from using Sen. Bob Corker's slam of the party's "cult-like" allegiance to the commander-in-chief.

"What's happened is before Donald Trump, the Republican Party had litmus-test issues — and they were based on principles or ideals," Dent, a moderate who left his Pennsylvania congressional seat vacant when he retired last month, told Brooke Baldwin on CNN.

"Certainly, free trade is one of those ideals and you were judged by that.

"If you weren't sufficiently pure, some would call you a RHINO or a squish — and we had the purity police out there, and now those people are confounded.

"More recently," Dent explained, "the litmus test is loyalty to the president.

"It's really not about any particular set of ideals."

On the Senate floor Tuesday, Corker, the Tennessee senator who is retiring at the end of the year, ripped Republicans for their "cult-like" embrace of President Trump.

Corker slammed the party in frustration as GOP leaders blocked a vote on legislation that would allow Congress to veto certain tariffs imposed by the president.

Dent, 58, who was first elected to Congress in 2004, explained further to Baldwin: "That's what we're dealing with right now, because the president of course, whether you like him or not, he's not particularly ideological.

"He's very pragmatic and some would say transitional," he added. "So, we're in a bad place now."

However, "I would not use a term like 'cult,'" Dent said. "I would not.

"What I've noticed is the people who are running for office who are doing a full bear hug on the president are doing well in their primaries, but it would not be wise strategy to say you're going to be a rubber stamp for the administration."
