Krauthammer: GOP's Healthcare Loss Is Win for Obama

Fox News' "Special Report"

Friday's decision by House Speaker Paul Ryan to shelf the GOP's healthcare bill resulted in a victory for former President Barack Obama, political commentator Charles Krauthammer said.

A planned House vote on the American Health Care Act was pulled at the last minute when Ryan and President Donald Trump realized they did not have the votes to pass it.

Krauthammer appeared on Fox News' "Special Report" and said Obama came away with a win, since the bill was designed to replace Obamacare.

"The big picture, I think, is that it is a victory for philosophically for Obama," Krauthammer said. "It is now seven years since the [Affordable Care] Act was put into place. The country has changed. There is now the generalized expectation that there is an entitlement to universal healthcare."

Krauthammer added that the GOP's bill was not the best piece of legislation that could have been introduced. By leaving out of the bill crucial pieces to the healthcare puzzle such as the ability to purchase insurance plans across state lines, Krauthammer said it ultimately resulted in Republicans looking bad.

"In retrospect, and perhaps in the future, you put all of that in a House bill, you pass it, you send it to the Senate, and then let the Democrats kill it with a filibuster," he said. "If that's where the country is, let it be that way and then the Republicans at least will not have a political black eye."
