Billionaire industrialists Charles and David Koch, founders of the powerful conservative political advocacy group Americans for Prosperity, have launched a super PAC believed to be a response to liberal billionaire Tom Steyer’s decision to pour some $100 million into making climate change a key issue in the elections.
Politico reports that the Koch’s newly created Freedom Partners Action Fund will spend more than $15 million in this year’s midterms, while
The Daily Beast says the group will "drive the national narrative around energy and the tremendous benefits of reliable affordable energy for all Americans, especially for the less fortunate."
The super PAC’s spokesman gave a statement to Politico but it did not specifically reference the energy component.
"The Freedom Partners Action Fund will support candidates who share our vision of free markets and a free society and oppose candidates who support intrusive government policies that push the American Dream out of reach for the American people," said Marc Short, president of Freedom Partners Chamber of Commerce.
The new super PAC – which will be under the Koch brothers’ umbrella – is the brothers’ response to America’s growing energy debate, according to the Daily Beast. In addition to Steyer’s announcement to prioritize climate change – spending $100 million to run ads in several states – President Barack Obama recently announced his decision to use executive power to cut carbon emissions and push renewable energy.
Freedom Partners Action Fund is "likely to mix a minimalist regulatory and free-market message with a pro-consumer spin," according to the Daily Beast, which notes that the initiative’s website says the federal government relies on "unsound science."
The website states that "environmental regulations, an unaccountable federal bureaucracy, activist judges, and the fringe environmental groups are working together to stall the production and use of these vital resources."
