President Donald Trump sent out a tweet on Tuesday announcing that both Republican senators running in the twin Georgia elections, Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue, have joined the effort to oppose Wednesday's Electoral College certification of President-elect Joe Biden.
“Pleased to announce that @KLoeffler and @sendavidperdue have just joined our great #StopTheSteal group of Senators,” the president wrote. “They will fight the ridiculous Electoral College Certification of Biden. How do you certify numbers that have now proven to be wrong and, in many cases, fraudulent!”
Trump wrote the tweet after Loeffler released a statement on Monday evening that should would oppose Wednesday’s certification.
A few minutes before Loeffler's sent out her message, Perdue posted a clip of his Sunday Fox News interview in which he said he is urging his colleagues to object.
"I'm encouraging my colleagues to object. This is something that the American people demand right now," he said. "There are huge irregularities in Georgia. They need to be investigated, and they need to be corrected, in my opinion."
However, Perdue won’t actually being able to vote on the issue, CNN explained. The senator’s first term ended on Sunday and Tuesday’s runoff election results won’t be certified by Wednesday’s Senate vote on the Electoral College, thus disqualifying him from participating.
Loeffler’s case is different, because she is filling a seat vacated by Sen. Johnny Isakson's retirement, and thus will stay in office until the results of the runoff are certified.
