The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield will not testify before a House committee on the reopening of schools after the Trump administration blocked his appearance.

"Dr. Redfield has testified on the Hill at least four times over the last three months," the White House said in a statement, ABC News noted. "We need our doctors focused on the pandemic response."

House Education and Labor Committee Chairman Bobby Scott, D-Va., requested that Redfield testify in a letter and criticized the decision.

"It is alarming that the Trump administration is preventing the CDC from appearing before the committee at a time when its expertise and guidance is so critical to the health and safety of students, parents, and educators," he said in a statement, The Hill reported.

"I think really people underestimate the public health consequences of having the schools closed on the kids."

The most recent appearance by Redfield was before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee on June 30, when he testified about people returning to work and school following the easing of government restrictions to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.

He testified to the House Energy and Commerce Committee a week earlier.

Redfield told The HIll on July 9 that keeping schools closed is a greater health hazard than having them reopen.

"I'm of the point of view as a public health leader in this nation, that having the schools actually closed is a greater public health threat to the children than having the schools reopen," Redfield said.

"I think really people underestimate the public health consequences of having the schools closed on the kids."
