A Democratic lawmaker is urging the Trump administration to ban oil exports and imports of luxury goods into North Korea to push Pyongyang into negotiations with the United States.

In an interview airing Sunday with radio host John Catsimatidis on "The Cats Roundtable," Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., pointed to success with the strategy under President Bill Clinton.

"Twenty years ago, President Clinton got them to the negotiating table by cutting off the oil. We haven't done that," Maloney said in remarks posted ahead of the show by The Hill.

"We keep ratcheting up the sanctions, and one I'm calling for is to cut off the import of all oil products to North Korea. All I know is what brought North Korea to the table last time, when President Clinton was successful in getting them, was the sanctions that cut off the oil products."

Maloney added that prohibiting imports of luxury goods would target the country's wealthy class, since current sanctions largely affect average citizens.

Maloney was part of a congressional delegation – also including Democratic Sens. Ed Markey of Massachusetts, Jeff Merkley of Oregon, Chris Van Hollen of Maryland and Republican Rep. Ann Wagner of Missouri – that traveled to Hawaii, South Korea, Japan and the border between North Korea and China.

On Saturday, President Donald Trump talked by phone with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe about the "escalating" nuclear crisis with North Korea. After Pyongyang fired a ballistic missile over Japan last week, Trump tweeted that "talking is not the answer."
