Former Hewlett-Packard CEO and Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina has been a hit in Iowa, The New York Times is reporting.

When Fiorina gave a speech at the Lincoln Day Dinner on May 16, along with 10 other Republican presidential hopefuls, the line was reportedly out the door and snaked down the hallway with Iowans waiting to meet the former Silicon Valley executive at the meet-and-greet following the dinner.

By comparison, both former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum waited in their hospitality suites with only a handful of supporters wanting to meet the potential presidential candidates.

Fiorina's speech included a joke about former President Bill Clinton's hormones, as well as references to God that were so well-received that when her microphone was cut off at the allotted 10-minute mark, there were complaints from the crowd.

"It was the most exciting speech all night," Cait Suttie, a 27-year-old who attended the dinner, told the Times. She added that she now wants to be a volunteer for Fiorina's campaign.

However, the Times reports that it's not unusual for Iowans to be drawn to firebrand underdog candidates like Fiorina, who announced her candidacy May 4.

There have been surprisingly large turnouts at her events in the Hawkeye State, and she was also well-received at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference in Oklahoma City.

While Fiorina, who lost a run against Sen. Barbara Boxer in California, has yet to be successful as a politician, she does bring marketing experience from her tenure in the tech industry. With that comes the ability to read an audience and give pithy speeches, the Times said.

While it remains to be seen if Fiorina will be able to expand her popularity beyond Iowa, the Times says that "something is happening on the ground here."
