The FBI's raid on President Donald Trump's attorney Michael Cohen was more about "scaring the hell out of the president," veteran journalist Carl Bernstein said Tuesday.

Bernstein, one of the journalists who covered the Watergate scandal during Richard Nixon's administration, said that Trump "knows better than anyone what he and his lawyer have discussed."

"Trump is trapped. He knows that he is trapped. This investigation is closing in on him, and the prosecutors in New York now have his lawyer's computers and what is on them," Bernstein told CNN's "The Lead With Jake Tapper."

And "it doesn't necessarily go away if you fire [special counsel Robert] Mueller or [deputy attorney general Rod] Rosenstein," Bernstein said.

Cohen's computers could contain "explosive information," Bernstein said.

And there was "no evidence" Mueller's probe is a "witch hunt" as Trump has said.

"If it were, there would be hell to pay at the end of Mueller's investigation, and there ought to be hell to pay if it really were a witch hunt. But there's no indication of that," Bernstein told CNN.
