Camp Considering Mich. Senate Run

Camp Considering Mich. Senate Run

By    |   Tuesday, 30 July 2013 10:47 PM EDT

Rep. Dave Camp, R-Mich., is seriously looking at a possible run for the Senate next year, reports Politico.

Camp said he has huddled with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to discuss the move.

“I have talked to McConnell,” said on Tuesday. “I’m looking at it.It’s a big  decision, and I’m going to look at it very carefully and thoughtfully.”

Camp made no mention of a specific date for entering into the race.

Camp is the chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, but due to term limits, he will be stepping down from that post at the end of this Congress.

With Democratic Sen. Carl Levin set to retire, the GOP is looking for a big-time candidate for the race but so far, no one has sparked any big interest from the party.

Terri Lynn Land, a former Michigan secretary of state, in already in the race and the National Republican Senatorial Committee has met with Kim Small, a Michigan judge, about a possible run this month.

Rep. Justin Amash, who has also considered running, believes it will be a hard road to victory for any Republican.

“Otherwise it becomes a very difficult battle and it’s already a difficult battle, no matter what,” Amash said.

“This is a Democratic state, still, and for a Republican to win a Senate race you have to have a very good year for Republicans….”

Rep. Gary Peters is the leading Democratic nominee and has shown to be a formidable opponent in hypothetical match-ups with potential GOP candidates in recent polls.
