Donald Trump's attack on New Mexico Gov. Susanna Martinez last week could aptly be summed up by the adage: if you mess with a bull, you get the horns, writes Byron York of the Washington Examiner.

Trump isn't going to allow a slight to go by uncontested just because the primary is over, or just because Martinez is a popular Latina Republican. And to be clear, Martinez has thrown shade Trump's way — nor has she endorsed the GOP presumptive nominee — so Trump counterpunched, and with a much larger microphone.

York wrote he was told by a source on Team Trump that Martinez criticized Trump in April to a group of wealthy GOP donors and has continued to do so privately since then.

"Trump has made a principle of hitting back harder than he is hit," York wrote.

Then to top it off, Martinez didn't attend Trump's visit to Albuquerque, saying she was too busy. So Trump did what he has been doing all along — send a message to "get in line," York writes.

"Trump apparently felt it was more important now to crack down on Republican resistance, at least on GOP politicos who openly attack him, than it was to ignore Martinez's opposition," York wrote.
