Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., applauded White House budget director Mick Mulvaney for his honesty when he testified Tuesday he would have voted against President Donald Trump's budget as a congressman.

Mulvaney was not breaking any news during Tuesday's budget hearing; he said the same thing Sunday on a talk show.

"I'll give the same answer I gave on Sunday," Mulvaney told Murray during the hearing. "Which is, that as a member of Congress representing the 5th district of South Carolina, I probably would have found enough shortcomings in this to vote against it."

Mulvaney, a guest Sunday on CBS's "Face the Nation," answered "probably not" when asked if he would have voted for Trump's budget as Tea Party congressman.

However, the Office of Management and Budget on Tuesday walked back Mulvaney's comments, saying the budget director was talking about the budget caps, not the budget overall.

"Just to be clear, Director Mulvaney was referring to the recent caps deal when answering Senator Murray's question this morning. Naturally, he would vote for the President's FY19 budget that he released yesterday," OMB spokesman Meghan Burris said.
