After being "blindsided" by Republicans with the 2017 omnibus spending package, President Donald Trump is determined to cut government spending while keeping taxes down, conservative commentator Jeffrey Lord told Newsmax TV.

"I think in candor he was a little blindsided by Republicans," Lord, an aide for former President Ronald Reagan told Tuesday's "America Talks Live." "The problem here, as President Reagan could vouch for, is never tax cuts, it's spending."

The 2017 omnibus, "passed by Republicans I might add," "set off alarms" for President Trump, according to Lord.

"I really do think he is going to be Johnny on the spot with this, because he does believe this is a serious problem," Lord added to hosts John Cardillo and Dr. Gina Loudon, who asked whether the still growing national debt will be a campaign issue for Republicans in November and President Trump in 2020.

"And the last thing he wants to do is be the president who, you know, led us down that path."
