Rep. Buddy Carter, R-Ga., said that Georgians might be dealing with unprecedented devastation right now, but they are "fired up" about voting for former President Donald Trump, who has put "boots on the ground" in the Peach State in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.
During a Monday appearance on Newsmax’s "American Agenda," Carter discussed concerns about how the storm could impact the election in Georgia in November.
"I think people recognize the candidate who's been down here, who's had boots on the ground and has been down here to visit already, and those who haven't been down here, and I think they're determined to get out and vote and make sure they send a message that we appreciate President Trump being down here in the state of Georgia," Carter said. "We appreciate his attention and that we recognize that the other candidate hasn't been down here. But I will tell you that we're fired up about voting, and it's going to take more than a hurricane to stop us from voting this time."
The Republican congressman said that the situation in Georgia post-Helene is "just devastation," the likes of which he’s "never seen before."
"I've been through a lot of hurricanes down here in my home of South Georgia and I will tell you, I've never seen anything like this," Carter said. "Trees down everywhere. Georgia Power says it's the worst that they've ever seen. 5,000 poles down, over 425 miles of wire, unbelievable what has happened in our state here."
Carter also sent out "kudos" and "praise" for Georgia’s "emergency medical personnel who have done just such a great job during this time," as well as the workers of Georgia Power and electric membership cooperatives who have "been working nonstop to make sure that people get their power back" despite very little rest or sleep.
With another storm on the horizon that could potentially make landfall in the United States, Carter called for prayer for those affected by Helene and preparedness for another major weather event.
"We need to be prepared and thank you for mentioning that, because people need to understand there is another storm down there that is brewing and could potentially cause us harm again," he said. "So, we need to be prepared, but right now, we're still in the search and rescue. And not to forget about Hurricane Debbie that came through. It was a tropical storm by the time it came through Georgia, but, at the same time, it caused devastation as well. … God bless those people in Florida. They took the brunt of this. I've seen pictures from down there. It looks like a bomb went off down there and we really need everyone's prayers throughout the country right now."
