GOP Rep. Brian Mast, who represents a district near the Parkland, Fla., high school where 17 people died in a Feb. 14 mass shooting, says he supports the idea of armed teachers.

In an interview aired Sunday on CBS News’ “Face The Nation,” Mast, an Army war veteran who lost both legs in battle in Afghanistan, also called for a “pause” in the sale assault weapons — an issue on which he’s had a change or heart.

“I think some teachers… are the right candidates for this,” he said of allowing teachers to carry guns in school to protect their students and themselves. “Absolutely…. [those] that had training, that had the desire to do this.”

But he said training would be key.

“[R]emember they are people too,” he said. “They can leave a firearm laying around. They don't necessarily have training in identifying the threat and identifying the innocent. And you have to make sure that they get the appropriate level of training.”

Mast said he’s hopeful there’ll be an exploration of an end to assault weapons’ sales.

“I think we can get the president on board and members of Congress onboard to say let's put that same kind of pause on onboard right now where we look at who's having access, what do they have access to,” Mast said.

“Let's get back to the American people after this pause with sensible regulation with sensible solutions because we are going to look at this in a very real way,” he added. “It made sense in the case of terrorists coming into this country. I think it should make sense in looking at guns.”

Mast said he reacted to the Parkland high school shooting “personally.”

“It pains me to know that I went out there willing to defend my country, willing to give everything with almost the exact same weapon that's used to go out there and unfortunately kill children here in Parkland,” he said. “And I think there's a very real opportunity here…for action and that's what really brought me to my change of heart in talking about this. I just can't stand to see that personally.”
