Report: Groups Behind Kavanaugh Protests Put Nonprofit Status at Risk

The liberal groups behind the organized disruptions at Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation hearings likely have violated Internal Revenue Service rules and could be at risk of losing their nonprofit status, The Daily Caller is reporting.

According to the website, those groups include Women's March, the Center for Popular Democracy, and Housing Works.

The Daily Caller said it listened in on a conference call with activist organizers, who are planning to continue their "civil disobedience" in an attempt to "shut down" planned confirmation proceedings on Monday.

However, The Daily Caller said such conduct is not permitted under IRS rules.

The website quoted IRS Ruling 75-384 as saying, "an organization … that planned and sponsored protest demonstrations at which members were urged to commit acts of civil disobedience did not qualify for IRC 501(c)(3) or (4) exemption."

Cleta Mitchell, identified as a  top campaign finance lawyer and conservative activist, believes the nonprofit groups’ tax-exempt status should be scrutinized for their involvement in advocating and funding criminal activity.

“These groups should lose their tax-exempt status because of these actions, which are in violation of established IRS precedent,” Mitchell told The Daily Caller.

More than 200 activists were arrested for disrupting Kavanaugh's confirmation hearing in early September. The demonstrators fear that Kavanaugh's confirmation would shift the Supreme Court's balance for years on issues like abortion rights, LGBT freedoms, and gun control.
