George W. Bush released a statement Thursday saying he reached out to cancer-stricken Sen. John McCain to offer encouragement, but "instead, he encouraged me."

McCain was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer after the removal of a blood clot last week revealed a tumor, which was subsequently also removed.

McCain earlier Thursday tweeted thanks to all the well-wishers and vowed to "be back soon."
