Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., underwent surgery over the weekend as he continues to battle brain cancer in his home state.
The office of the 81-year-old released a statement Monday that detailed McCain's health troubles.
"On Sunday, Senator McCain was admitted to Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona, and underwent surgery to treat an intestinal infection related to diverticulitis. He is in stable condition," the statement reads.
"Over the last few months, Senator McCain has been participating in physical therapy at his home in Cornville, Arizona, as he recovers from the side effects of cancer treatment. He has remained engaged on his work as Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and has enjoyed frequent visits from his family, friends, staff and Senate colleagues."
McCain was diagnosed with brain cancer last summer. He returned to work a short time later and was in and out of Washington throughout the fall before traveling home to Arizona in December, where he has been ever since.
McCain's daughter Meghan recently hinted her father may return to the Senate this summer.
McCain has remained vocal from afar as he battles cancer, speaking out against President Donald Trump and voicing his opinion on matters when he sees fit.
