Donna Brazile: GOP, Dems Must Work Together on Immigration

(Fox News' "The Daily Briefing")

Lawmakers need to work together across party lines to solve the immigration puzzle, former interim chair of the Democratic National Committee Donna Brazile said Tuesday.

Brazile was on Fox News and discussed the ongoing controversy at the border that involves separating children from their parents when people illegally cross into the United States from Mexico.

"I think the only way we are going to solve a problem like immigration reform is to have Democrats and Republicans at the table," Brazile said. "The border security, the ability to make sure that those who are here without papers, we need to have a path. We need to have a process."

Ever since Attorney General Jeff Sessions instituted a zero tolerance policy toward illegal immigration in May, illegal aliens who enter the U.S. with their children are separated. Adults are processed as criminals for illegally entering the country, while the children are held in detention facilities.

People who arrive at an official port of entry, however, are not separated from their children.

Brazile said it is time lawmakers joined forces to soften the policy.

"I do believe that the Democrats really would like to come to the table with the Republicans to work on this," she said. "But the president needs to understand policy-wise, we should stop separating children from their parents."
