Conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh on Tuesday accused the news media of spreading "fake photos of children crying" in their coverage of family separation at the U.S.-Mexico border, Mediaite reports.

"I wonder, if when we have a story like this where the media is using fake photos of children crying," Rush said. "Well, it's not fake that they're crying, it's that the children may not even be who they’re being said to be, and the children may not be separated."

"They may not be at the border," Limbaugh continued. "But I wonder how much of this that the media's doing is to play off and to corral people who are already wimps and linguini-spined when it comes to kids."

Criticism over the Trump administration's zero-tolerance policy continues to mount as nearly 2,000 children have been taken from their parents since May – and photos from the coverage have been mentioned as cruel by lawmakers, protestors, and news anchors.

The policy directs Homeland Security officials to refer all cases of illegal entry for prosecution, resulting in children being placed in custody at a branch of the Health and Human Services Department while the adults are processed.

Far right columnist Ann Coulter made similar remarks Monday during an appearance on Fox News.

"I would also say one other thing, these child actors weeping and crying on all the other networks 24/7 right now — do not fall for it, Mr. President," Coulter said on "The Next Revolution with Steve Hilton."
