The Faith & Freedom Coalition is urging lawmakers on Capitol Hill to end the practice of separating illegal immigrant families when they sneak across the United States' border with Mexico, calling it "heartbreaking and tragic."

Ralph Reed, the founder and chairman of the conservative religious group, released a statement outlining the nonprofit's feelings on the matter.

"The separation of families illegally crossing the border is heartbreaking and tragic, part of the larger tragedy of a broken immigration system that does not reflect our values or our faith," Reed said. "We urge Congress to act now to end the separation of children from parents at the border, reunite families legally entering the country, and secure the border."

Border Patrol agents have been separating children from their parents when families are caught illegally entering the U.S. since Attorney General Jeff Sessions instituted a zero tolerance approach to stopping illegal immigration in May. Adults are being processed criminally, while children are being held in holding areas.

Democrats, Republicans, and everyone in between have expressed their outrage over the separation policy.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Monday night separation only occurs when people illegally cross the border. Arriving at a port of entry does not result in children being taken to a separate facility than their parents, he said.

Reed used the opportunity to put his weight behind two bills being floated on Capitol Hill that would both secure the border and prevent families from being separated.

"Both the Securing America's Future Act and the compromise bill are common-sense and compassionate approaches to shielding children illegally brought to our country through no fault of their own while taking meaningful steps to ensure nobody finds themselves in the same situation in the future," he said.
