An upcoming book, said to be written by an unnamed senior administration official, claims high-level White House aides were convinced Vice President Mike Pence would have backed using the 25th Amendment to remove President Donald Trump because of mental incapacity, the HuffPost is reporting.
The book, called “A Warning,” is due to be published Nov. 19. It was reportedly written by a current or former senior White House official, who used the pen name “Anonymous.” The author had anonymously released an opinion piece in The New York Times last year claiming to be part of a “resistance” in the Trump administration.
Passages from the book, were provided to HuffPost by an unnamed source.
The news outlet said White House officials did an unofficial tally of Cabinet members who would be prepared to sign a letter invoking Section 4 of the 25th Amendment of the Constitution.
That section says the vice president would take over if the president is deemed unfit.
The letter would have needed the signatures of a majority of the Cabinet. It would then have to be delivered to Pence to sign and then forwarded to Congress.
The HuffPost said there was no doubt in the minds of these officials Pence would support it.
But Pence’s Press Secretary Katie Waldman, reacting to the report, labeled it as “fake news” in a Wednesday night tweet.
The idea, which was never formalized, came soon after FBI Director James Comey was fired by Trump in May 2017. The HuffPost said aides described Trump’s behavior at the time as “unhinged.”
