House Speaker John Boehner has proven himself to be a heavyweight fundraiser on behalf of his party – to the tune of $70 million – since taking over the speaker’s gavel in January 2011.
He has raised that much money for Republicans during this period, according to a memo Boehner’s political office gave The Hill. That $70 million has accrued to several different vehicles – Boehner’s campaign and political action committees, the National Republican Congressional Committee, and the campaigns of individual candidates and members.
Boehner’s total dwarfs that of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, perhaps the Democratic Party’s second most potent fundraiser after President Barack Obama. As of May 1, Pelosi had raised $43.4 million for Democrats since the beginning of 2011, a spokeswoman for the minority leader told The Hill.
At a similar point in 2010, then-Speaker Pelosi had raised $28.5 million for the Democrats, according to The Washington Post at that time.
